North Village seek to bounce back
North Village coach Calvin Dill Jr is seeking to turn things around when the champions face X-Roads at Bernard Park tomorrow.
Village have endured a difficult start to their title defence with a point from the opening two matches of the season after a 2-1 home loss to Devonshire Colts and a 1-1 draw with Devonshire Cougars.
The Rams have one point from their first two games and are in an unfamiliar position in the standings for a team that clinched the double last season.
Dill, who will not be on the bench after being sent off against Colts, feels that they have used the international break well to prepare for the match.
“I'm hoping to get three points, but you can't take X-Roads for granted,” the Village coach said.
“For the last two weeks we’ve been preparing for Sunday. The coaching staff and I have put the work in for getting them ready for the match.
“We have been working on putting away our chances and making sure we can defend as a unit.
“Looking at how we have started the season, it’s a new group of players and we’re just trying to get everybody to understand how we want to play. Every game is the time to turn around things and get better at what we’re doing.”
X-Roads have made a brilliant start. Farid El Karfa’s side opened with a 2-1 victory over Paget Lions, which they followed with a stunning 3-0 triumph over PHC.
“X-Roads have a good coach and they play good football at times,” Dill said.
“They have a good front line, so we just have to stop them from scoring and make sure that when we get our chances, we put them away.”
Cougars coach Mark Mills is looking forward to their Devonshire derby with Colts at Police Field.
His side have only played one game after their fixture with Boulevard was postponed due to the unavailability of Goose Gosling Field at the end of September.
“We are ready for the Devonshire derby, which is our second league game of the season,” Mills said.
St George’s Colts can put home advantage to good use when they welcome Paget to Wellington Oval.
Drewonde Bascome’s side recovered from a 1-0 loss to PHC with a 3-0 success over Boulevard.
Paget are yet to taste victory after losing to X-Roads and picking up a point from the 1-1 draw with Young Men’s Social Club.
Boulevard, with no points so far, clash with Social Club in the last match of the weekend, which has been rescheduled to Devonshire Rec at 6pm tomorrow.
