The Sargasso Sea Commission has been added to a list of non-governmental organisations which will take part in the fifth annual Youth Climate Summit this month.

The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute said the “carefully curated event” which runs from November 17 to 22 is designed to maximise learning experiences and raise awareness for local environmental initiatives.

It is also geared at providing access to a robust network of local and global organisations connected to climate action, higher learning and future career opportunities in a variety skilled trades and professional roles related to the environment and climate.

Students between the ages of 13 and 22 will engage with representatives from local environmental organisations and supporting partners during the Environmental Showcase of the event which will be held at BUEI on November 20.

The Bermuda Audubon Society, Bermuda Is Love, Bermuda National Trust, Bermuda Ocean Prosperity Programme, the Bermuda Zoological Society, Beyond Plastic Bermuda, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences and Arizona State University will take part in the event.

They will be joined by the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Bermuda, Greenrock, Keep Bermuda Beautiful, Nonsuch Expeditions and Waterstart.

The summit will feature Maynard Okereke, known globally as The Hip Hop Scientist, in what will mark a “milestone” year for the event the BUEI said.

It said the event “is a multifaceted programme” which is designed to empower the island’s youth to advocate for their future by providing opportunities to connect with subject matter experts and international youth activists working in the climate sector.

“These experiences are designed to both educate and motivate young people, encouraging them to play an active role in driving sustainability and contributing to long-lasting change, both locally and globally,” it added.

After the week of activities at each summit, students are given an opportunity to remain engaged with the YCS and participate in the yearlong programme.

The BUEI said the “highly impactful programme” rolls throughout a 12-month period and provides young people with experiential learning, skills development, and youth-led action projects.

As such, it empowers them to find their voice and use it to advocate for their future, the BUEI added.
