Miles Outerbridge, one of Bermuda’s most promising track and field athletes, has chosen to pursue his career at the University of Houston.

Outerbridge, who is in his final year at Montverde Academy in Florida, announced on Instagram yesterday that he was heading to Texas next year.

“I am excited and proud to announce my commitment to the University of Houston,” the 17-year-old said.

“I am beyond grateful to all my coaches back home and at Montverde who have allowed me to reach this point in my track journey. Along with a huge thank you to all my family who have supported me throughout.”

During the recruitment process, Outerbridge, a four-star sprinter, was ranked 148th with a rating of 82 according to the 2026 Scholar Champion Athlete national boys recruit search.

At Houston, Outerbridge will be under the guidance of the legendary Carl Lewis, who is coaching young athletes for future competitions, including the 2028 Olympic Games.

Outerbridge met the man regarded as one of the greatest Olympians when he went on his Houston official visit last month. The Bermudian also toured facilities at the University of Iowa, before making his final decision.

“It was great to meet coach Carl Lewis,” the young athlete said.

“It was an honour to be able to talk and spend so much time with him on my visit.”

Outerbridge’s decision comes a few weeks after fellow Bermudian, Arima Turner, who is also at Montverde, committed her future to Cornell University.

Both athletes are products of Bermuda Pacers Track Club. On Sunday, Outerbridge was named the club’s Male Athlete of Year, with the female accolade going to Amaris Munya, another rising track star pursuing her career at Montverde.

Norbert Simons and Janine Scott are the coaches credited with shaping the careers of Outerbridge as well as Turner at Pacers.
