The Government has started a search for suppliers for the next generation of firefighting vehicles.

A recent procurement notice sought qualified proponents to express interest and demonstrate capability to design, build and deliver up to six “Class B medium duty fire pumpers”.

The notice stated that delivery of the vehicles should be over a six-year period as part of a “strategic, multiphase fleet renewal programme” to strengthen the island’s emergency response capability.

It added: “The intent of this request for supplier qualifications is to identify and prequalify suppliers with the proven technical expertise, engineering capability and after-sales support infrastructure necessary to deliver fire apparatus that are custom-built to meet Bermuda’s unique geographic, road and operational conditions.”

Procurement documents included with the notice said that shortlisted proponents would be invited to take part in a subsequent request for proposal concept, in which more detailed technical specifications would be requested.

The documents said: “These Class B fire pumpers will form a critical part of the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service frontline fleet and are intended to bolster Bermuda’s firefighting and rescue capabilities.

“The vehicles must be engineered and equipped to meet the stringent demands of emergency operations, while conforming to modern fire service standards and best practices.”

Special emphasis would be placed on “right-sizing” the vehicles for the island’s narrow roadways, compatibility with Bermuda’s water supply systems, enhanced corrosion resistance for coastal environments and “clean cab design principles” for health and safety.

Specifications listed in the documents included a minimum 500-gallon water tank and a foam system, two high-pressure hose reels and full compatibility with BFRS tools and equipment.

The selected suppliers would also be required to provide training and maintenance support, comprehensive after-sales service and technical support, and promise reliable availability for spare parts.

All submissions must be received by 5pm on December 8.
