Families can enjoy two classic Christmas movies in the heart of Hamilton next month.

A City spokeswoman said a special edition of Fresh Air Films will take place in front of the flagpole on December 6.

The fun begins with a screening of The Muppet Christmas Carol starting at 6.30pm.

The film will be shown in celebration of Bermudian Michael Frith, who played a central role in the creation of the Muppets and whose work The Art of Michael K Frith: From Pencil to Paper is on display at the Bermuda National Gallery.

The spokeswoman said: “Mr Frith himself will be in attendance to share a few opening remarks at 6.25pm, giving audiences a rare opportunity to meet the man behind the Muppets before the film begins.”

Eve Godet Thomas, BNG director of exhibitions, said: “Pop in before or after the movie screening to see how these characters began, and you'll get to meet several of the original puppets too.

“We’re thrilled that the City has selected a Muppets title this year, as it creates a meaningful connection to the exhibition and helps share Michael’s extraordinary contribution with an even wider audience.”

The event also includes a screening of The Santa Clause at 8.30pm.

Admission is free with a $25 receipt from any Hamilton business between November 3 and December 6.

The spokeswoman said: “Attendees can write their name and telephone number on the back of their receipt to enter for a chance to win an Ultimea Nova C40 Smart Projector.

“One winner will be drawn for each film. Those wishing to enter both draws should present two qualifying receipts.”

The night will also include a Muppets character quiz for ages 5 to 12 and a Christmas movie trivia game aimed at all ages.

Lorna Hayward, Hamilton’s senior events co-ordinator, said: “We can’t wait to turn Front Street into a twinkling, open-air Christmas theatre.”

She added: “We encourage retailers and eateries to take advantage of the atmosphere and consider extending hours or offering specials to welcome the increased foot traffic.”

Burnaby Street from Reid Street to Front Street will be closed from 3pm to 11pm, and Front Street, between No 1 and No 5 car parks, will be closed from 5pm to 11pm to accommodate the events.

No 1 and No 5 car parks will remain open, but eastbound traffic will be diverted north at Queen Street, westbound traffic will detour at Parliament Street, and business trash should be placed out by 4pm on December 6.
