Former deputy premier to address COP30 climate meet
Bermuda will be represented this week at the United Nations COP30 climate change conference with Walter Roban, the former deputy premier and Minister of Home Affairs, speaking on the issues faced by island jurisdictions.
Mr Roban’s online talk on Thursday, hosted by the firm Island Innovation, will be part of a panel on the challenges for subnational island jurisdictions and overseas countries and territories on accessing global climate finance owing to their non-sovereign status.
Mr Roban has represented the island overseas at previous climate conferences, such as the Green Overseas Climate Finance Forum — a programme funded by the European Union to support overseas countries and territories in accessing climate funding, improving resilience and accelerating their transition to green energy.
The COP30 conference in Brazil ends on Friday.
Mike Eman, the Prime Minister of Aruba, will be the keynote speaker on Thursday.
Others joining Mr Roban are Karl Thrower, the St Helena Minister for Economic Development, Environment, Natural Resources and Planning; Edison Rijna, the Caribbean Netherlands special envoy for EU and UN and Economic Development with Latin America and Caribbean; Patrice Gumbs, the Sint Maarten Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure; and Jeannie Cameron, States Member of the Government of Alderney in the Channel Islands.
