Community invited to night of ‘sustainable fashion’
Residents have been invited to join fundraising at the Bermuda College to raise awareness of sustainable fashion and purchasing habits.
Sip Swap Slay will be held on November 29 by the college’s Eco Club at its Paget campus, starting at 6pm with a mini fashion show followed by a short documentary highlighting “how to be more responsible with what we wear and how we wear it”.
A thrift store will run from 7.30pm to 9pm for guests to swap “preloved” clothing.
Workshops on sustainable fashion will be held in the Athene Lecture Hall with the thrift store on the second floor at the Hallett Hall.
The club said a similar event in 2022 had been a success, when “the local community really embraced the idea of swapping clothes and reducing their ecological footprint”.
The club encouraged residents to drop off old clothing in bags marked for the event at the college library between 9am and 5pm daily until next Friday.
They can also obtain “swap tokens” to use in the event’s pop-up shop.
Participants can bring ten items to swap on the night.
Tickets can be purchased on Ptix.bm. General admission is $10, with patron tickets, which include two free glasses of Prosecco wine, for $50. The fundraiser is cash only.
Proceeds will support club initiatives. All donated clothes not swapped will be given to the Pals thrift shop.
Hugo Lightbourne, a club member and Bermuda College student, said the fundraiser was an opportunity to give away clothing in good condition and gain some in return.
The club said it “strives to raise awareness as well on the significance of adapting more responsible shopping behaviours”.
Amy Harvey, senior lecturer in environmental science at the college and a club mentor, said it aimed to raise awareness about critical environmental issues on a local and global scale.
