Bermuda bowlers give their all in Hong Kong
Bermuda’s ten-pin bowling team of Mike Honore,David Maycock, Anthony Hayward, Dayvon Tucker, Lamar Richardson and Dennis Joell have finished competing at the International Bowling Federation World Bowling Championships in Hong Kong.
On Tuesda the Bermuda team bowled seven games of qualifying before the field was cut to the top eight. The island’s representatives finished 28th, with a score of 1,253 and an average of 179. Powerhouses such as the United States and Malaysia also did not make it to the second round.
Maycock, one of the senior players in the team, spoke of the determination displayed by the island’s bowlers.
“While we didn’t make it to the matchplay round, we worked hard as a team and gave it our best effort from start to finish,” Maycock said.
“Despite the challenges, we maintained great communication, supported each other and bowled with focus and determination.
“It was a solid team effort and though we fell short of advancing, we can be proud of how we came together. We will work on our game and we will come back stronger next event.”
Maycock feels they need support, especially in the area of coaching, if they are to compete against the best in the world.
“Although we were short on resources, we gave it our all,” he said.
“The lane conditions were very challenging and making it difficult to score. Going forward, we will definitely need more funding and a certified “gold level” coach to work with us to progress to the next level.
“These bowlers are among the best in the world and mostly all of them are full-time professional bowlers or sponsored to bowl full time. We appreciate the help that we have had thus far, but the reality is much more is required.”
