Town hall on modular housing plan to be held next week

A town hall to discussed a proposal to install modular homes in Sandys will be held next week.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Housing and Municipalities said the public meeting is set for the Western Zone Community Clinic on Kitchener Road at 7pm on December 16.

He added: “This engagement forms part of the Government's commitment to open dialogue and transparency as it works to address Bermuda's urgent affordable housing shortage.

“During the session, ministry representatives and technical officers will provide an overview of the proposed pilot.”

Elements to be discussed include the purpose of the modular housing initiative, how the pilot fits into Bermuda’s long-term affordable housing strategy, who the units are intended to support, site layout, design features and safety standards.

Attendees will also hear how tenancy, maintenance and site management will be overseen, and learn more about the planning process, expected timelines and opportunities for public input.

The meeting will involve a brief presentation, followed by a question-and-answer segment offering the public an opportunity to speak with officials and raise concerns.

Zane DeSilva, the Minister of Housing and Municipalities, said: “We recognise that any development near a residential community must be approached with care, clarity and respect.

“This town hall is a crucial opportunity for us to listen, explain the purpose of the modular housing pilot and collaborate with the Boaz Island community as we address Bermuda's broader housing challenges.

“We encourage all residents to attend, ask questions and share their views.”

Mr DeSilva announced the pilot programme in November as part of a plan to bolster emergency housing on the island.

He told the House of Assembly: “To respond swiftly to urgent housing needs, the ministry has procured 11 modular and expandable container homes, which will be installed on one of the available sites under the ministry’s responsibility, through the Bermuda Housing Corporation or the Bermuda Land Management Corporation.

“The units comprise six one-bedroom capsules, one two-bedroom capsule and four expandable container homes offering two and three-bedroom configurations.

“Installation is scheduled for completion within the next three to four months.

“Once deployed, these units will provide immediate relief to families in the most critical need and serve as a live pilot to assess modular construction as a long-term housing solution.”
