Goalkeeper Nathan Trott to take on Chelsea in cup quarter-final
Bermudian goalkeeper Nathan Trott could face one of the biggest challenges of his career tonight.
Trott is likely to be between the posts for Cardiff City as they host Premier League giants Chelsea in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup at 4pm Bermuda time tonight.
The 27-year-old has been one of Cardiff’s early-season stars, with the Welsh side heading the League One standings on 41 points after 19 games, four points clear of their nearest rivals Bradford City,
Cardiff made it through to this stage of the competition by coming out on top of a passionate fourth-round Welsh derby 2-1 against Wrexham, with Trott instrumental in that victory as he was in the success against Premier League Burnley in the previous round.
The Welsh side will harbour hopes of another giantkilling, with Chelsea struggling away from home of late, losing to Atalanta in the Champions League and Leeds in the Premier League in their last couple of games on the road.
Enzo Maresca’s side beat League One side Lincoln City in the third round and prevailed in a thrilling 4-3 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers to reach this stage, but the Italian coach is likely to rotate his squad for this match.
Cole Palmer, who scored in Chelsea’s win over Everton at the weekend, has not travelled to Wales and a brief look at the London side’s starting XI for the match against Wolves suggests that stars such as goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, Marc Cucurella, Pedro Neto, Joao Pedro, Enzo Fernandez, Reece James and Wesley Fofana are likely to start the game on the bench.
Trott has some recent experience against Chelsea, starting on the bench for Copenhagen in the Europa League round of 16 in March.
