Warwick Academy swimmers dazzle in Charlotte
Members of the Warwick Academy’s high-performance swimming team put on impressive displays to win 12 medals at the Queen City Dolphins Holiday Invite in North Carolina.
Logan Jones was the most successful swimmer with four medals last weekend. The 16-year-old won bronze in the 500 yards, silver in the 200 freestyle, bronze in the 100 backstroke and gold in the 100 free.
“It was a good meet overall,” Jones told The Royal Gazette.
“I went into the meet a little sick, but felt really prepared. The training leading forward to it was really good.
“On Saturday we started off with the 500-yard freestyle and that went pretty good.
“I wanted to go a little bit faster, but I understand that sometimes swims don’t go your way, which leads to my next race, the 100 fly.
“I had the 500 free right before, so I was a little tired going into it and I didn’t swim the best. It led me to go into quite a negative head space, which also reflected in my 50-yard freestyle.
“On Sunday, I was a complete different swimmer. I started off with a 200 freestyle where I got a personal best time. After that I did the 100 back, where I also got a PB. To end off the morning, I did 800 freestyle and it went well.”
Jorgia White secured gold in 1,000 free and silver in the 1,650. Noah Fulton clinched bronze in the 1,000, with his sister Elanna winning silver in 100 back.
Ethan Smith secured gold in the 200 free and bronze in the 500 free, while Jacob Leclerc won silver in the 500 free.
Axel Wernbo, Zach Johnson, Noah Fulton and Jones combined in the Men’s A medley relay to pick up bronze, while the freestyle team of Noah Fulton, Axel Wernbo, Jaime MacFarlane and Jones won silver.
Coach Ben Smith praised the team’s performance at the three-day meet.
“These results reflect not just the medals, but the work the athletes put in every day,” Smith said.
“We saw leadership from our seniors, confidence from our developing swimmers and a real team culture throughout the meet. It was an outstanding weekend for Warwick.
“With momentum building and confidence growing, the Warwick swim team now turns its focus towards the next phase of the season, carrying forward the lessons and success from a truly impressive weekend in Charlotte.
“The next major event for the team will be the Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships in Pennsylvania, in February. After a couple of days rest, they will start intensive training over the Christmas break at the National Sports Centre.”
