A One Bermuda Alliance parliamentarian has praised the decision to refuse planning permission for the introduction of a zip-line attraction at Southlands.

The planning application by EDI Bermuda proposed installing a series of zip lines at the Warwick park to create a family-friendly attraction.

The plans were rejected by the Development Applications Board this month after the National Parks Commission refused to support the proposal.

Linda Smith, the OBA MP for Southampton West Central, said: “As we move into the holiday season and round out 2025, it is great to see that the National Parks Commission has ruled in favour of protecting Southlands National Park.

“Echoing the concerns of over 6,000 people who signed a petition against overdevelopment and hundreds who attended the September rally at Southlands, it is gratifying to see that people’s concerns have been acknowledged and supported.”

The zip-line attraction was one of several proposals that have arisen for the park, and have garnered mixed responses from planning officials.

A proposal to modify a building to serve as an office for the Mirrors programme was given the green light, while plans to convert a garage into an apartment was struck down.

Other plans have included creating a car park and café on the southern portion of the site and using another vacant building for a meeting space for Mirrors.
