August 2025: Two men shot dead in broad daylight

The island was rocked by the double gun murder of two men in broad daylight on Court Street.

David Burt, the Premier, said tragedy had “shaken our island once again” after police later named the victims as Nakai Robinson, 18, and Natrae Eversley, 23.

The incident was one of a series of violent acts that led to island-wide talks about how to tackle gang and gun violence in Bermuda.

A police investigation is ongoing.

By the middle of the month, an ambitious plan to launch a “world-class” medical tourism sector in Bermuda was introduced.

A partnership between Government and island company Medical Concepts Consulting Management was formalised by the signing of a memorandum of understanding.

The Premier described Medical Concepts as an “internationally recognised leader for healthcare facility development”.

Lou Maroun, the company’s chairman and founder, said the facility — to be known as the Bermuda International Healthcare Centre — will be a “comprehensive ecosystem” that will bring together clinical care, wellness, research and education services, as well as partnerships with internationally recognised medical institutions.

“It will invite patients, clinicians and researchers from around the region and from around the world,” Mr Maroun added.

He said the first phase would begin with three cornerstone developments — an intermediary-stay behavioural health centre, a medical hotel and an ambulatory surgery centre equipped with leading-edge technology.

Mr Burt acknowledged that a previous attempt at medical tourism in Bermuda about 20 years ago had not materialised and that a facility ended up being developed in the Cayman Islands instead.

He said: “That is why it is important that you have a future vision and take advantage of the trends so we talk about research and other things that can be done under international standards.

“This has taken a little longer than we would have liked, but that was to get it to the point where we know we have done all the necessary research and we are comfortable that we can make this work inside of the Bermuda context.”

Also in August, a “full and final” settlement was reached after a lengthy dispute between the Corporation of Hamilton and a company that lent money to jump-start a city hotel development which never broke ground.

The agreement with Mexico Infrastructure Finance included a payment by the municipality of $8.2 million, funded through a loan from Clarien Bank.

Its details were made public in the corporation’s 2024 audited financial statements.

The notes explained that the municipality agreed to make “a one-time payment of $8.2 million in exchange for the retrieval of property deeds and the conclusion of all legal proceedings in both Bermuda and the United States”.

They added: “To fund the settlement, the corporation obtained a loan of $8.75 million from Clarien Bank on February 25, 2025.

“The loan is repayable over a ten-year period through fixed monthly instalments secured against the corporation’s revenues from car parking and ship wharfage.

“The corporation has budgeted for these repayments in its long-term cashflow forecasts.”

The month brought with it some intense weather systems resulting in several lightning strikes on land and sea.

Notably, fishing boat Hunter’s LunaSea was engulfed in flames in Queen’s Cove, Mill Creek, Pembroke, after being struck.

The thunderstorm also dealt hits to the Bermuda National Trust’s office, Waterville, in Paget, as well as Lindo’s Market on Brighton Hill in Devonshire, although staff at the supermarket said there was little damage.

Later in the month, emergency crews attended Sunjammers Bar and Grill in St George’s after a man was hurt as a result of a lightning strike.

Luca Legrenzi, who witnessed the incident, said the man was standing on a firepit near the restaurant when the lightning struck, knocking him to the ground.

Mr Legrenzi said: “The guy was standing on the grill. At that moment, lightning struck down in that general area. I believe it passed through the building and him, and he fell to the ground.”

Finally, hundreds were left without power as Hurricane Erin passed northwest of Bermuda.

The system was located “a few hundred miles east” of the Leeward Islands.

The National Hurricane Centre said: “Environmental conditions appear conducive for further development, and a tropical depression is likely to form this weekend while it moves near or to the north of the northern Leeward Islands.”

Erin passed Bermuda as a large Category 2 hurricane, with its closest point to the island at about 372 miles to the northwest.
