Impaired driving costs senior citizen 18 months off the roads

A senior citizen who was given a chance by police but was later caught drink-driving has been banned from the roads for 18 months.

Rudy Sewell, 71, admitted driving a car while impaired by alcohol when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard that police noticed that Sewell was unsteady on his feet when walking from a St George’s bar to his car on December 17.

Officers spoke to Sewell, who sat in the police car until a friend offered to take him home.

However, police stopped Sewell after seeing him behind the wheel a short time later and took him to the Hamilton Police Station.

Sewell, from St George’s, was also fined $1,500.
