Netball teams back in action
Netball teams are back in action at Bernard Park today in tournaments marking the resumption of activities following the festive season break.
The three junior age groups are competing in the Merle Parfitt Hustle tournament, while the seniors will engage in battle for the Sylvia Eastley Memorial.
With the senior teams in the Premier Division and First Division competing against each other, Storm Surge have decided to merge their sides for the tournament. Debré Evans, the Storm captain is eager to take to the court.
Storm went into the interval second in the standings behind Lindo’s Tigers.
“We are excited for the first tournament of the season,” Evans said.
“We will be combining our First Division and Premier Division teams for his tournament, so that should be extremely great as both teams have limited players.
“It’s a round-robin tournament with both divisions mixed up, so it will be interesting to see how the different divisions compete with each other.
“At Storm, we are looking to put our best foot forward for these matches and hope we end up with a good result.”
Former league champions, Phoenix Heat, have not played much netball this season. They are bottom of the standings after playing two matches and losing both. Kianté Lightbourne, one of the Phoenix senior players, wants to use the tournament as a turning point.
“Tournaments after the break are always an exciting return and will allow us to get the legs going,” Lightbourne said.
“We have played less netball than everyone else, so will have a few make up matches coming up in between what is already scheduled.
“We just have to be ready to hit the ground running, the tournament will definitely help with that.”
