The Mid Atlantic Athletic Club has presented “lost” runner Dennis Mbelenzi with some merchandise after he got lost during the Rum to the Beach race on Sunday.

Mbelenzi, who would have won the first road race of the year but for taking a wrong turn when following motorbike rider Willis Dill, was handed some club kit by MAAC president Martin Merritt yesterday.

Dill, who apologised to Mbelenzi a day earlier, was adamant that MAAC Club, the organisers of the race, should also be held accountable for the unfortunate incident.

However, in response to Dill’s assertion, the club claim marshals were present at that particular location where he took the wrong coursee and that attempts to alert the runner of his error were made in vain.

“At the intersection in question, volunteer race marshals and spectators were present,” the club said in a statement.

“Once it became apparent that Dennis had taken an incorrect turn, efforts were made to call out and redirect him.

“It appears, however, that these calls may have been interpreted as encouragement for a closing competitor and in the competitive spirit he is known for, Dennis continued forward and increased his pace.”

“We sincerely regret the circumstances surrounding the incident involving Dennis Mbelenzi and Willis Dill.

“As Dennis has indicated, this was an unintentional occurrence as both he and Mr Dill were unfortunately unfamiliar with the course modifications implemented a few years ago.

“Following the event, we contacted Dennis and engaged in a productive and positive conversation with him. We have also tried to reach out to Mr Dill and remain hopeful to speak with him soon.

“While the situation was sincerely unfortunate, we are grateful it concluded safely and we appreciate the understanding shown by everyone involved.”
