Arrested senior officer on restricted duties

A senior police officer who was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving after a collision last month has been placed on restricted duties, the Bermuda Police Service confirmed yesterday.

An investigation continues into the crash, which involved a police vehicle and a motorbike near Warwick Playground on South Road.

The BPS have not named the officer involved but The Royal Gazette understands that it was Superintendent Jerome Laws.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes confirmed yesterday that an investigation continued into “the serious injury collision involving a police vehicle driven by a serving police superintendent” on December 19.

He said: “The police officer, who was alone in the vehicle at the time of the collision, was arrested at the scene and is currently on police bail.

“The police officer is currently working on restricted duties, pending the results of the enquiry.”

The motorcycle rider sustained a serious, non life-threatening injury in the collision, and the matter has been referred to the BPS professional standards department.

Darrin Simons, the Commissioner of Police, said in the hours after the crash: “This situation underscores a commitment that defines our service — we hold ourselves to the same level of accountability as we do any member of the public.

“Integrity matters, trust matters. When our officers fail to meet the standards we set, we take action.”

Mr Laws was promoted to superintendent in 2024 and his roles have included working with the PSD.
