Crucial diabetes message prominent in Triangle Challenge
A charity’s bold move to spark conversations on diabetes came with the three-day Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge over the weekend.
The Bermuda Diabetes Association’s team and volunteers carried eye-catching signs to raise awareness of the chronic condition.
Messages such as “Someone you love has pre-diabetes and doesn’t know it” were displayed.
Spectators were invited to sign up for diabetes peer support sessions and free pre-diabetes screenings set for this month and early February.
Francesca Wyatt, marketing and community relations co-ordinator at the BDA, said: “Pre-diabetes can be easy to overlook because it often comes without symptoms until it’s too late — but the numbers are impossible to ignore.
“One in eight people in Bermuda has pre-diabetes, which means most of us are either personally affected or know someone who is.
“By bringing this message into the heart of the Triangle Challenge, we made awareness unavoidable.
“The signage gave people and opportunity to think about their health, the QR codes turned attention into action and the response to our free pre-diabetes screenings showed just how ready the community is to take control of their health.”
Reid Robinson, co-race director at the Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge, said the event was proud to give support.
He added: “The Triangle Challenge is about more than racing — it is about bringing the community together and promoting healthier lifestyles, and this activation aligned perfectly with our mission.”
Pre-diabetes occurs when blood sugar climbs above normal, but not enough to reach disease level.
Lifestyle changes can prevent or delay the condition’s onset before it leads to more serious complications such as vision loss, high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease.
