Within reach: lack of finances is not a barrier to attending the Bermuda College, its president says (File photograph)

Education has the power to change lives, and that truth is evident every day at the Bermuda College.

Across Bermuda, students of all ages are seeking opportunities to advance their education, retrain for new careers, and gain the skills needed in a changing economy. Some are just beginning their academic journey, while others are returning to education after time away. What unites them is a belief that learning can unlock a better future — and that belief is well founded.

At the heart of that opportunity is financial aid.

Financial aid at the Bermuda College exists to ensure that Bermudians are not prevented from pursuing higher education or professional training because of cost. It is one of the most direct ways we remove barriers and expand access to education, workforce development and long-term economic resilience.

Last year alone, more than $577,000 in financial assistance was available to Bermuda College students. Over the past five years, that figure has exceeded $3.1 million, averaging more than $620,000 annually. This support comes through a collaborative effort involving government funding, the Bermuda College Foundation, institutional resources and private donors — all working to ensure that education in Bermuda remains accessible and inclusive.

The impact of this support is significant. Students enrolled in academic (credit) programmes may be eligible for scholarships covering 80 to 100 per cent of tuition, while need-based financial aid typically ranges from 30 to 80 per cent. For Bermudians facing greater financial vulnerability, assistance may cover up to 100 per cent of tuition costs.

Financial aid is not limited to traditional degree programmes. Bermudians pursuing professional and career development through the Division of Professional and Career Education (Apace) are also eligible for support. As industries evolve and new skills are required, financial assistance for professional certifications and career-focused programmes helps to ensure that Bermudians remain competitive, adaptable and prepared for workforce change.

Each year, an average of 269 academic students receive financial aid at the Bermuda College. But the true value of financial assistance cannot be measured in numbers alone. When someone realises that further education is financially achievable, confidence grows. Goals feel attainable. Possibility becomes action.

Removing financial barriers is more than an administrative process; it is a commitment to opportunity. That commitment is reflected in the Bermuda College’s 2025-30 Strategic Plan, — Innovate, Inspire, Impact — which prioritises access, modernised programmes, adult learners, real-world experience and stronger global pathways. Financial aid is fundamental to making those goals achievable for Bermudians.

Despite the availability of scholarships and grants, many people remain unaware of the financial support available to them or assume they do not qualify. Improving awareness is essential.

To address this, the Bermuda College has made financial aid information clearer and easier to access through its redesigned website, and the Financial Support Services team is available to assist students in person or virtually. With application deadlines approaching for upcoming academic and professional programmes, eligible students are encouraged to explore their options and apply in a timely manner.

Financial aid succeeds because of partnership, among policymakers, donors, alumni, educators and the wider community. In a small island nation, every educated Bermudian strengthens our workforce, our economy and our shared future.

For those considering their next step — whether starting college, returning to education, or upskilling for career advancement — now is the time to explore what support is available. Financial circumstances should never be the reason ambition is delayed.

The support is here. The guidance is available. And the opportunity is within reach.
