FA Cup giants poised for battle
Two of the most successful teams in the history of the FA Cup will lock horns in the first round of the prestigious competition for the second straight season at Somerset Cricket Club tomorrow (2pm).
Hosts Somerset Trojans and visitors PHC Zebras, who have 20 titles between, will renew their famous rivalry in a contest pitting Premier Division against First Division.
Eleven-times champions PHC beat Trojans on penalties despite having two players sent off in a gripping cup tie at the same venue last season. Tomorrow’s contest promises to be just as entertaining as both teams look to secure passage through to the next round.
PHC will have to make at least one change to their starting line-up as midfielder Haile Eve was sent off in their previous outing in the league against Dandy Town.
Assistant coach Kyle Lightbourne is also expected to take over the helm in the absence of head coach Cecoy Robinson, who was sent off the bench in the same match.
Coincidentally, Eve was one of the two players sent off in his team’s FA Cup first round clash with Trojans last season.
Promotion contenders Trojans, who have nine FA Cup titles under their belt, will certainly be out to avenge that defeat against Zebras in which they pushed their opponents hard before ultimately falling short in the penalty shoot-out.
Elsewhere tomorrow, Paget Lions will host Young Men’s Social Club in an all Premier Division affair at White Hill Field (2pm).
Bluebirds hold a psychological advantage heading into the contest having beaten Lions in the league in the previous meeting between the sides earlier this month.
The remaining cup ties will feature Corona League sides FC Rhino, Young Gunz Sound FC and Inter Bermuda, who will be looking to upset their highly fancied opponents.
Young Gunz, who claimed the scalp of First Division side St David’s Warriors in the previous round, are facing a more daunting task this time out against Premier Division leaders Devonshire Colts in the first match of a double header at Somerset Cricket Club (noon).
FC Rhino face Premier Division side and 2023-24 champions St George’s Colts in the first match of another double header at White Hill Field (noon).
Inter Bermuda also produced an upset in the previous round with victory over First Division side Somerset Eagles and will be hoping to repeat dose against top flight opponent X-Roads Warriors at Police Field (noon).
