Perry prevails in Moongate Tour opener

Adam Perry started the new year with a bang after winning the Moongate Tour season opener at a blustery Port Royal Golf Course yesterday.

The professional shot an impressive one-under 70 in the trying conditions to finish three shots clear of the 32-strong field boasting some of the island’s top players.

“Super happy with my play today,” Perry told The Royal Gazette. “Haven’t played and practised much in the past couple months, so I went into today with zero expectations.

“Conditions were tough so always happy to be under par. Two/three club wind today so it was hard to control distance.”

A bogey-free front nine saw a flawless Perry make the turn at one-under after rattling in one of his three birdies of the round at the par-5 second hole.

“I just tried to keep it simple trying to hit fairways and greens,” he said.

Perry played the remaining holes at even par despite dropping two shots on the stroll coming in at the par-71 Southampton layout.

“Played some really good golf from thirteen to seventeen, which is probably the toughest part of the course,” he said.

“Definitely had a bit of drive from the team [Turtle Hill] aspect with my captain Scott Roy pushing me to play, so happy I came out.”

Amateurs Jevon Roberts and Jarryd Dillas finished tied for second at two-over, 73.

Roberts struggled on the front nine, which he played at four-over, after carding two bogeys and a double at the par-3 eighth green.

However, he managed to steady the ship over the remaining holes, which he played at two-under after carding three birdies to finish on a brighter note.

Dillas was at even par through 11 holes before back-to-back bogeys at No 12 and 13 put him at two-over, where he remained the rest of the way after regaining his poise.

Professionals Daniel Augustus, Damon Smith and Kenny Leseur, the defending Tour champion, finished another shot back at three-over 74.
