HSBC Bermuda and the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences have renewed their commitment to work together through the Climate Classroom programme.

The immersive education programme, exclusively sponsored by HSBC for the past four years, brings hundreds of middle school students to the ASU BIOS campus for hands-on workshops exploring climate science and its impacts on Bermuda.

The programme also helps to improve science literacy and empowers young people to view themselves as environmental stewards who can help shape the island’s future.

Kaitlin Noyes, the director of education at ASU BIOS said: “Seeing this programme grow from strength to strength each year is so inspiring.

“We can’t wait to welcome students to our campus, introduce them to the new learning elements and see how they work together, solve problems and discover science.”

Kim Rose, HSBC Bermuda’s community investment manager, added that meaningful progress on environmental issues requires collaboration across all sectors.

She said: “Supporting programmes like Climate Classroom empowers young people with the tools to take action.

“It shows that small, informed steps, when multiplied across a community, can create real, lasting impact.”

The programme is one area of collaboration between the two organisations

In October, Craig Carlson, the ASU BIOS president and director, joined HSBC staff at the bank’s headquarters for a lunch-and-learn session, introducing employees to the work of ASU BIOS and its global role in ocean science.

In November, more than 100 HSBC Bermuda employees joined ASU BIOS staff, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Keep Bermuda Beautiful in a clean-up effort, removing invasive species, restoring pathways, cutting back overgrowth and planting native species.
