Man admits drink driving after Pembroke crash

A man who crashed his motorcycle on Woodlands Road, Pembroke after drinking was banned from the roads.

Romar Amante, 39, of Pembroke, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while impaired by alcohol in an incident on January 26.

Magistrates’ Court heard that at about 1am that day, police received a report of a single-vehicle collision in which a motorcycle collided with a wall and a male had been seen laying in the road.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a damaged motorcycle against a stone wall near Saltus, but the rider was no where to be found.

The officers checked the vehicle’s licence and went to the owner’s registered address where they found Amante with torn clothes and visible injuries, smelling of alcohol.

While Amante accepted that he had been involved in a collision, he appeared confused and could not tell officers where it had occurred or where his motorcycle was.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired and, while he initially refused to provide officers with a sample of breath, he later agreed while at the Hamilton Police Station.

Of the two samples provided, the lower showed a reading of 157.4 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — almost double the legal limit of 80 milligrams.

Senior magistrate Maxanne Anderson fined Amante $1,500, which she ordered him to pay forthwith, and banned him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
