Bermuda to play friendly against World Cup hopefuls DR Congo
Bermuda’s footballers will face some Premier League stars when they play Democratic Republic of Congo in an international friendly in Mexico this month.
Newcastle forward Yoane Wissa, West Ham United full back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the Sunderland duo of Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku, together with Burnley central defender Axel Tuanzebe, a former Manchester United academy graduate, are likely to feature in the game.
According to Afrik-Foot, the Leopards will face the Gombey Warriors behind closed doors on March 25 in Guadalajara, in a friendly scheduled just days before the most crucial showdown of their World Cup campaign.
DR Congo, 48th in the Fifa rankings (Bermuda are 169th), are using the friendly to prepare for the Fifa World Cup inter-confederation play-off on March 31. Sébastien Desabre’s side will play the winner of the match between New Caledonia and Jamaica, who finished second in a qualifying group that contained Bermuda.
“Facing Bermuda will serve as a dress rehearsal for our team,” a member of the DR Congo coaching staff is quoted as saying on the website.
Speaking after Bermuda’s domestic camp last month, Bermuda coach Michael Findlay said he was looking to play two friendly matches during the upcoming international window, scheduled for March 23 to 31.
The matches will help Findlay and his coaching staff prepare for the Nations League, which starts in September and acts as a qualifier for the Gold Cup.
