Drivers battle fog and rain at latest karting meet

Preparing to start meeting 12 of the Bermuda Rubis Energy Karting Championship

Despite a foggy and rain-soaked start to the day, racing eventually roared to life on Sunday as the Bermuda Karting Association hosted meeting 12 of the Bermuda Rubis Energy Karting Championship.

A total of 44 competitors took to the track, with early morning weather conditions delaying the start of racing.

One of the day’s highlights came in the L206 class, which featured a record-breaking 18 karts on the grid — the largest number of competitors ever racing simultaneously in a single class. The race also marked the debut of new driver Blake Camara.

Competition was intense across all three heats in the division, with positions changing frequently throughout the day.

Jason “Skuzzie” North captured the checkered flag in Heats 1 and 3. Owen DeCosta secured second place those races, while Brian Bulhoes claimed victory in Heat 2 and finished third in Heat 3. Robert Wheatley completed the podium in Heat 1 with a third-place finish. In L206 Master class, Richard Walker Talbot took the flag in all three heats.

In the Tag Senior division, Ryan Burgess crossed the line first in Heat 1 and placed third in both Heat 2 and Heat 3. Nathan DeCosta dominated the later heats, taking first place the final two races. Blake Horseman finished third in Heat 1 before moving up to second in Heat 2 and 3. Jorja Thomas and Jonah Moniz maintained consistent performances, finishing fourth and fifth respectively across all heats.

Consistency also defined the Tag Junior class, in which Tanner Correia claimed first place in all three heats. Alondro Albouy held second place throughout the day, while Jonathan Linberg secured third place in Heats 2 and 3.

In the KZ Masters category, William Dunkley delivered a strong performance, winning Heat 1 and finishing second in both Heat 2 and Heat 3. Jason DeCouto placed second in Heat 1 and continued with solid finishes in the remaining heats.

The KZ class featured ten karts on the grid and produced some of the day’s most competitive racing. Heat 1 saw Blake Horseman take the win, followed by Ryan Rebello in second and Ryan Burgess in third. Rebello responded in Heat 2 by taking the checkered flag, with Horseman second and Burgess third. Rebello continued his momentum in Heat 3, finishing first again, while Burgess and Stephen Corrado secured second and third respectively.

The Cadet class also saw steady results throughout the day. Tanner Correia came out on top followed by Jacob Garrett in second place. Mason Sousa finished third, while Miguel Cabral rounded out the field in fourth.

With just two race days remaining in the season, drivers are pushing their limits as the championship battle intensifies in the closing rounds of the 2025-2026 Bermuda Rubis Energy Karting Championship.

The next event will make history for local karting, as racers compete in the first-ever night race under the lights at the Southside Motorsports Raceway. The event will take place on Friday, March 27, and Saturday, March 28, with gates opening at 5pm and racing beginning at 6pm. Admission is $10.

Spectators will have the opportunity to witness Bermudian and International drivers battle it out on the track in what promises to be a thrilling night of motorsport.
