Medical issues caused two ships to divert to Bermuda within four days, the island’s maritime operations centre reported.

The centre was first informed at 8.15am on March 20 that the oil tanker MV Flex Artemis, en route from Algeciras, Spain to Lake Charles, Louisiana wanted to divert to Bermuda because a Filipino crew member was experiencing serious abdominal pains.

The ship arrived in Bermuda waters at 11.45am on Saturday and the pilot boat St George picked up the 49-year-old crew member, who was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance and treated.

Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received another call, from the bulk carrier MV Basic Passion, at 12.20pm on Friday.

The vessel was heading to Convent, Louisiana from Rotterdam, the Netherlands but wanted to divert to Bermuda so a worker who was injured following a fall could receive assistance.

The ship arrived in local waters at about 11.30pm on Monday and the crew member, 39, was picked up by the St George and taken to the hospital via ambulance for treatment.
