Kenni Thompson revels in cup success watched by her family

Kenni Thompson takes the corner that wins the game for Bournemouth

Kenni Thompson has revealed her delight that her winning goal in the National League Cup Final for Bournemouth was witnessed in person by her family.

Thompson was the Bournemouth match winner after scoring direct from a corner in the 1-0 win over Plymouth Argyle.

After the victory, Thompson revealed the pride she took in performing in front of her sister, who was in the stands to watch the game.

“My sister is living in London so she got to come and it’s not often I get to see my family at games,” Thompson said.

“I spoke to my mum on the phone afterwards and even though she can’t be here she’s always supporting me. They always support me regardless of where they are but to see my sister while I am actually on the field was special.

“It’s been a long journey for me as I left my home at 11 years old and I don’t usually get to have my family with me, but it’s part of the job and something that I’ve had to sacrifice. But I owe everything to them and every step of the way they’ve been with me.”

Bournemouth sit third in the Women’s National League Southern Premier Division but have their work cut out to get promoted, sitting six points behind their cup final opponents Plymouth, who occupy the runner-up spot.

For Thompson, victory was sweet as Bournemouth stepped up from winning the consolation Plate final a year earlier.

“It’s amazing and this is what we wanted to do last season but we went out early,” Thompson said.

“I know we went on to win the Plate but this season we’ve gone on to do bigger and better and to win the cup is an amazing feeling.

“To get the goal to push us over the line is always amazing but it’s a whole team effort. The goal came very early on and the girls had to see out the game for the win. Everyone that started, everyone that came on, we all put a shift in and did the job together.”

Scoring direct from a corner ― an Olimpico ― is something that Thompson says is always on her radar.

“I’ve tried that corner a couple of times this season and it’s either gone out or hit the post,” she said.

“It’s one of those where you put it into an area and anything can happen, thankfully this time it went in. Every time these days come around we step up a level. We know the occasion but we’ve got so much support from the club, our fans and our families, that an extra bit of grit comes out of us on those occasions.”
