Genomic conference hailed as success for Bermuda
Organisers behind the Bermuda Principles 30th Anniversary Conference have branded the event a success, drawing almost 100 experts, innovators and policymakers to the island.
The four-day conference, held at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club in February, was intended to bring stakeholders together to advance the future of genomics.
It also paid tribute to the legacy of the Bermuda Principles, the result of a 1996 meeting between scientists made on the island to share genomic data openly for the benefit of all.
A spokeswoman said that the conference attracted 92 people to the island from 19 different countries to take part in keynote addresses, technical sessions and public engagement events.
She added: “A standout moment of the conference was the public session, ‘The Future of AI in Business’ with Nvidia, which broadened the event’s reach beyond the scientific community and highlighted the growing intersection between genomics, artificial intelligence, business innovation and decision-making.”
Andrew Murdoch, the Governor, opened the conference stating that Bermuda continues to be an “active and innovative contributor to global genetics”.
He added: “The work on this beautiful archipelago shows that innovation, leadership and collaborations can take place anywhere.
“It needs talent, passion and imagination, and this island has that. I look forward to meeting the next generation of Bermudian scientists and data specialists.”
The spokeswoman said that the gathering was estimated to have injected $350,000 into the Bermuda economy between accommodations, hospitality, transportation and other services.
She added: “Feedback from delegates was overwhelmingly positive, with many attendees expressing a strong desire to return to Bermuda for future editions of the conference.
“Their enthusiasm reflects not only the quality of the programme, but also Bermuda’s unique ability to host world class international gatherings in an environment that fosters both innovation and collaboration.”
