Man fined for taking, having fish
A man who took fish from a seasonally protected area was fined $6,500 in Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Troy Brimmer, 62, admitted unlawfully taking fish from the northeastern grouper box during a prohibited period, attempting to take fish from the area and having two red hind — a protected species — less than 35cm long when he appeared in court in January.
Brimmer committed the offences on September 27, 2024.
No fishing is permitted within the “grouper boxes” — critical zones for grouper aggregation — between April 15 and November 30.
Magistrate Tyrone Chin fined Brimmer, from Pembroke, $2,000 for having the hind, $3,500 for taking the fish and $1,000 for attempting to do so, and ordered him to pay by April 30.
