Public school educators recently visited the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Science as part of an effort to bolster Stem educational opportunities for Bermuda students.

Crystal Caesar, the Minister of Education, joined teachers on the visit, meeting with BIOS leadership to explore how Bermuda’s science curriculum can be better aligned with real-world ocean science, climate research and emerging technologies.

As part of the tour, the group received a first-hand look at the Atlantic Explorer, BIOS’s premier research vessel and explored BIOS’s Ocean Academy, which offers a range of innovative learning experiences.

Ms Caesar said she was pleased to take part in the tour and learn more about the programmes at BIOS.

She said: “The event confirmed our shared commitment to expanding collaboration through curriculum innovation and better teacher training.

“By bridging lab and classroom, Bermuda prepares students to lead on environmental issues and support the island’s sustainable future.”

Shannon James, an educational officer for science, added: “In Bermuda, the ocean is part of our everyday life. It’s who we are.

“What excites me about this continued partnership with BIOS is the opportunity to connect our students to real science happening right here at home.

“These experiences spark a lasting passion for science and inspire our young people to take ownership of their environment and their future.”

Among the experiences highlighted during the visit were experiential excursions, which offer hands-on activities aligned with science, high-tech learning tools, including virtual reality, and workforce development opportunities.

A spokeswoman for the education ministry said: “The partnership emphasises both academic achievement and environmental stewardship.

“Through VR and immersive field experiences, students can directly observe the effects of pollution on marine ecosystems, strengthening their understanding of Bermuda’s environmental challenges and their role in protecting the island’s natural resources.”
