Forum puts spotlight on modernising electricity sector
Residents have been invited to attend a forum in Hamilton on Monday to hear about the Government’s plan to modernise Bermuda’s electricity sector.
The Ministry of Home Affairs will host a public meeting on the proposed National Electricity Sector Policy 2026, which is open for consultation.
Members of the public were invited to submit feedback on the 61-page document, in which proposals included slashing earlier renewable energy targets in favour of more “cost-competitive” options.
A ministry spokeswoman said that the policy set out the Government’s intent to modernise Bermuda’s electricity sector for the first time in over a decade.
She said the plan anchors the transition in affordability, reliability and equity, while taking account of the rapid evolution of energy technology and the contribution of ongoing public and technical input.
The meeting at St Paul AME Church Centennial Hall in Hamilton on Monday will start at 6.30pm.
Attendees have been invited to put questions to ministry representatives and comment directly on the proposed policy framework.
The policy revealed that the Government plans to abandon its target for the island to produce 85 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2035 and instead expects to produce 93 per cent from fossil fuels in 2030.
It outlined that the Government’s guiding principles will be cost, reliability and equal access.
The public consultation closes next Wednesday and the ministry also called for written submissions, to be shared via forum.gov.bm.
Engagement on the National Electricity Sector Policy will continue beyond the close of consultation.
The ministry spokeswoman said that contributions and proposals received after next Wednesday will be logged for consideration as the policy and the supporting regulatory instruments develop.
She said decisions on the regulatory framework and specific technologies for the island’s electricity sector remain the statutory responsibility of the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda.
