What Bermuda Day means to us
With Bermuda Day celebrations taking place next week, we hit the streets of Hamilton to ask Bermudians one simple question: What does Bermuda Day mean to you?
The answers ranged from culture and community to family traditions, music, memories and national pride. For some it’s the races and the parade, for others it’s the feeling of seeing the island come together in one place, on one day, every year.
It was clear throughout every conversation: Bermuda Day is more than just an event, it’s part of Bermudian identity.
Satina Dillas: To me, Bermuda Day is all about culture, family and vibes.
Sumaya Lambe: Culture, family and then people. We get a diverse mix of what's present on the island. You have all the Bermudian groups, the Filipinos, the religious groups, all sorts of groups. It’s a great day and also the kick-off to summer for me.
Keishon Bean: Bermuda Day to me means culture. It’s time for friends and family and everybody to get around each other. It’s a time to celebrate the wonderful country that we have and the people that we have. It’s a time that I love to see everyone running, to see the parade, and it’s just a nice time every year.
T’syi Showers: I would say Bermuda Day for me is culture and fun.
LeeAnn Medeiros: Bermuda Day to me means celebrating time with friends, family and loved ones and just slowing down.
Hannah Bushara: What Bermuda Day means to me? Words that come to mind: electricity, spirit, smiling, support, love and joy.
Kathryn Morley: Bermuda Day means community and togetherness, celebrating this beautiful island.
Dylan Wilson: Bermuda Day means culture, a little bit of down time from work and kind of just embracing family and friends presence.
Dylan Craft: Bermuda Day to me means heritage and the races of course. I’m usually hanging out with my family on Bermuda Day, and the day off from work is nice.
Jeff Sousa: Bermuda Day is all about community, it’s about love, about Bermuda and all the things that make Bermuda so special. It’s too many to list in this short interview. As per the Pitt Commission, it was about Bermudians all coming together as one people and that is so important. Personally, I love Bermuda Day.
