Road alignment work to impact East End transport
Road alignment works tied to the replacement of an ageing East End bridge will begin on Monday with the installation of a detour route, the Ministry of Public Works and Environment said.
The work will bring frequent changes to traffic flow during the early phases of the Swing Bridge replacement project.
A spokesman said the ministry recognised the impact on traffic.
He added: “Our priority is to ensure the public understands what is changing, when it is happening and how best to prepare.
“While there will be some disruption, this work is a critical step in delivering long-term improvements to access, safety and connectivity.”
The spokesman said the detour route around the bridge would be done in four phases and is expected to be completed by September 7.
A temporary bus shelter will be constructed near the St David’s roundabout during the first phase.
No traffic will be allowed between that area and Kindley Field Park from May 25 to June 11.
The second phase, from June 11 to July 7, will involve moving a bus shelter from east of the St David’s roundabout to the south to establish a one-way system for the bus lane.
The next stage, from July 7 to 23, will see a mini-roundabout built near the main entrance to St David’s and no access from St David’s Road.
Another mini-roundabout will be constructed on Carters Bay Road from July 23 until September 7.
Work will be done from 7.30am to 6pm daily, but weather and other concerns may cause the schedule to vary.
Ministry representatives will manage traffic in the area with signs, barricades and personnel.
The ministry added that a campaign, “Connecting the Future of St George’s”, would share details, and apologised for any inconvenience the works may cause.
