Island’s top prospects do battle in Heritage Day Junior Classic
Race fans will get a glimpse into the future when some of the island’s top prospects showcase their budding talents in the 28th Heritage Day Junior Classic tomorrow.
Boys and girls aged 8 to 17 will again compete for overall and age group honours on a new two-mile course starting from the stop lights at the junction of Front and Court Streets and finishing at Dutton Avenue.
Seven winners from last year’s event are absent from this year’s field, including overall boys and girls champions Hasim Ming and Naomi MacGuinness.
Then 12-year-old Ming blitzed a formidable field with a dominant performance belying his tenders years as he beat out more senior rivals, including favourite Tobiah Goodchild, on the way to a comfortable victory in a time of 11min 31sec.
Naomi MacGuinness claimed overall girls honours for the third time and was also crowned girls 11-12 champion after crossing the line in 11:59.
The only winner from the previous race competing again this year is boys 8-10 champion Liam Horrobin, while Khaleef Daley, Freya Dunkle and Goodchild are also among those returning.
The annual event is organised by the West End Athletic Club and sanctioned by the Bermuda National Athletic Association.
Last year’s race was held in honour of late cofounder Clarence Smith, father of former star runner Kavin Smith, who achieved a record nine wins in the Bermuda Half-Marathon Derby between 1993 and 2003.
Among those paying their respects was Bermuda’s Olympic champion Dame Flora Duffy, who competed in the event as a youngster.
Tomorrow’s race starts at 9am.
