Sister, sister: teenage stars chosen for El Salvador trip
Sisters T’Mia and Phoenix Williams are taking part in Capital Basketera, an international youth basketball tournament in El Salvador.
The two were selected during a Raising The Bar Basketball Showcase held at The Berkeley Institute on April 24. The event was held in collaboration with Team Hurricane Basketball Academy.
Phoenix, the younger of the sisters, is studying at Mount Saint Agnes Academy, while T’Mia is enrolled at Christchurch School in Virginia.
At the free event in El Salvador, the Bermudians will be part of more than 500 athletes across 11 countries competing in categories from under-10 to under-21.
Kim Robinson, from Raising The Bar, expects the sisters to gain from high-level international competition, cultural exchange and exposure, relationship building with players and coaches from other countries.
“This is exactly why Raising The Bar continues to create platforms and showcases for Bermuda’s young athletes because opportunities can be created when preparation meets exposure,” Robinson said.
“Congratulations to T’Mia Williams and Phoenix Williams on this well-deserved opportunity. Raising The Bar is proud of you both and looks forward to seeing you represent Bermuda internationally.”
Doug Reed, founder and head coach of the Team Hurricane Basketball Academy, described the sisters as talented athletes.
“I’m extremely proud of T’Mia and Phoenix,” Reed said.
“I’m grateful that they have this opportunity to compete internationally. I absolutely love having them part of the Team Hurricane Basketball family.
“They have been with me now for about two years. They are both impact players who are extremely talented.
“T’Mia is a superb athlete, blazing quickness and tremendous leaping ability while Phoenix is blossoming into an outstanding point guard who displays great leadership skills when playing. She’s my coach on the floor.
“Both Williams girls have a bright future in this great sport of basketball. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for them.”
