Births rise for first time since 2020

The number of births rose in Bermuda for the first time since 2020

Bermuda births rose for the first time in five years while the number of deaths also decreased for the second consecutive year.

However, deaths, at 552, continued to outpace births, at 452, for the eight straight year.

The Registry General said in its 2025 annual report, released today in the House of Assembly, that live births reached the 452 mark — up 27 from 425 in 2024, when births hit their lowest point in decades.

Women between the ages of 30 and 34 continued to account for the highest number of babies born in 2025, at 137 or 30.3 per cent.

Women aged between 35 and 39 represented the second-highest number of mothers with 133 births or 29.4 per cent.

Six babies were born to mothers aged between 16 and 19, and one baby was born to a mother under 16, the first in at least five years.

Two women who were aged 50 or more gave birth.

However, the number of mothers aged between 20 and 29 giving birth also rose in 2025, with 123 births occurring in the year, up from 91 in 2024.

Of the total number of births, 232 children had two Bermudian parents, an increase of 17 compared with 2024.

A total of 109 had one Bermudian and one non-Bermudian parent, down from 111 in 2024, while 111 children had two non-Bermudian parents, an increase of 12 from 2024.

Deaths of residents declined from 602 to 552, the lowest number since 2019.

The average age at death was 75.5 years, with the average age of death for men being 71.5 and 80.6 years for females.

The number of infant deaths jumped to four in 2025, up from one in each of the years 2022 to 2024.

The statistics prompted Michael Fahy, the Shadow Minister of Economy and Labour, to ask if the Government was putting measures in place to encourage more births to Bermudian parents.

Jason Hayward, the Economy and Labour Minister, said Government had worked to make the island more affordable through cost of living measures, and provided fees such as early childhood support to parents.

He denied that the ongoing trend of drops in births showed these measures were failing.
