Decide Caricom membership by referendum

A Caricom town hall: Malika Cartright, left, the moderator, Erica Smith, the executive director of the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation, Michael Scott, the government MP, and Alexa Lightbourne, the Minister of Home Affairs (Photograph by Alva Solomon)

Dear Sir,

Caricom is just like independence. It’s a very contentious, emotional and expensive proposition.

It has also become a highly divisive racial issue, which no doubt suits the Progressive Labour Party.

Legislation must not be bulldozed through Parliament but decided by the will of the people using a referendum.

The sparsely attended town hall meetings failed to convince full-membership viability or how it will be determined.

Caricom executives must be laughing all the way to the bank contemplating their Bermuda windfall.
