Sir John critical to survival of Masterworks

Tribute: Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art founder Tom Butterfield (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,

Bermuda has lost a great statesman, visionary, businessman and brilliant human being — the Swan family have lost a father. I first met Sir John on my return to Bermuda in 1980. In 1983, he was to become premier of the island for some 13 years. In 1987, the Masterworks Foundation (now also a museum) was created, and Sir John quickly aligned himself with its vision and mission — in fact, it was he who, in that year, nominated me for the Queen’s Badge and Certificate for services to the arts.

It was the result of Sir John‘s spiritual and moral support that our fledgeling arts foundation found its footing and kept its head above water with a sense of dignity and pride. Many locals looked upon us at the start as a bunch of reprobates; we called ourselves “art guerrillas”, waging art warfare wherever we could. It seemed that even though Sir John was busy running an island, he did not overlook our efforts and mandate. Lady Swan joined our board in 1990, helping us raise our profile in the community. During these early years, there were many discussions with other institutions, and oftentimes those discussions became heated, so Sir John would step in as moderator and mediator in the interest of community peace!

Had it not been for Sir John, perhaps our idea would have vanished, but when he stepped down as premier in 1996, we were well established. Lady Swan remained on the board for some 20-odd years, and their daughter Amanda carries on the family legacy as a director.

Throughout Sir John‘s life, the “kid from Friswells Hill” kept his dignity, compassion, humility, dedication, good humour and passion.

We may say farewell to Sir John in his physical presence, but never to his spiritual and sagacious legacy. We can never thank him enough, and can assure you all that we will continue our efforts while remembering his honour and wisdom.

We extend our condolences to Alison, Amanda, Nick and the grandchildren.
