Theatre Boycott to be marked with documentary screening
Specialty Cinema will screen excerpts of a documentary about the 1959 Theatre Boycott after the National Heroes weekend.
The Hamilton-based theatre, in collaboration with Imagine Bermuda, will also feature skits and presentations from public and private school pupils.
Glenn Fubler, of Imagine Bermuda, said he hoped the documentary would remind youngsters of the “heroes within us” who could go on to make a difference.
He added: “That’s what we want to encourage — the idea that people can activate and energise their own agency and their own heroic spirit.”
The free event will screen parts of the 2002 documentary When Voices Rise, which details the boycott that kick-started the dissolution of segregation on the island.
It will take place on the boycott’s 67th anniversary at the site of the very theatre the demonstration took aim at.
Mr Fubler said his son, Mandela, was involved with the project at 15 years old.
He added that he hoped children would take inspiration from the activists as well as his son and learn that they’re never too young to make a difference.
Mr Fubler said: “One of the things we want to do is talk about the things we, today, could be doing.”
He added: “Some people think the person in charge of the country has to change things, but we’re here highlighting the fact that ordinary people, ordinary heroes, were the people to change things.
“The intent is not just to look back and celebrate but also draw from these lessons.”
Shannon Easton, a co-owner of Specialty Cinema, said it was important for his establishment to recognise its own history, especially since there were people alive who remembered the discrimination.
He explained: “When I took over this place 18 years ago, a lot of the old folks would stand outside and not come in.
“They’d be like ‘we’re not going in there’ and then spell out the history.
“It took a while for our elders to come in here because of the history and realise it’s not what it used to be.
“Due to the past history, a lot of people were stained from that.”
Several pioneers with the Theatre Boycott are expected to be in attendance at the screening, as well as representatives from the Department of Education.
The event will take place on June 16 at Specialty Cinema between midday and 1pm.
