The Ministry of Housing and Municipalities has sought approval to erect a three-storey senior living facility in Southampton.

The Village at Cann Park II, proposed for construction near the junction of the Railway Trail and Sea Express Lane, would feature 110 single-bedroom units to provide “safe, affordable, accessible and age-friendly” accommodations.

Documents included in the planning application stated that in addition to three levels of residential units, the building would include a basement offering underground parking.

The document said: “The development will provide approximately 110 one-bedroom residential units specifically designed to support ageing-in-place principles and independent living for seniors and persons requiring accessible accommodation.

“The project seeks approval under the special needs housing provisions of the Bermuda Plan 2018 and represents an important component of Bermuda's long-term housing strategy by addressing the increasing demand for affordable senior housing while maximising the efficient use of a strategically located urban infill site.

“The development incorporates accessible design, structured parking, communal amenity areas, landscaped open spaces, recreational facilities, elevators, barrier-free circulation routes and modern residential facilities specifically tailored to meet the needs of senior residents.”

The application noted that the U-shaped building would feature a landscaped central courtyard to be used as a communal amenity space for residents with seating areas, walking paths, shuffleboard courts and more.

The basement garage would have spaces for 61 cars, while the site would also include parking for 53 cars and 44 bikes outside.

Documents said that it was hoped the project would have a range of public benefits including bolstering housing supply, improving quality of life for seniors.

They added: “The development incorporates extensive resident amenities, structured parking, open communal spaces, accessible design features and transportation infrastructure sufficient to support the proposed density while maintaining a high standard of residential amenity.”

The project was previously included as part of the initial phase of the Affordable Housing Programme intended to deliver 229 residential units spread across several sites within 18 months.

Other projects include 24 new units at Albert Row, 36 new units at Victoria Place, 24 new units on Tommy Fox Road and 35 units for seniors at Channel House in St David’s.
