The Bermuda Longtails under-10 baseball team recently competed in the Youth World Series Baseball Tournament at Ocean City, Maryland.

The Longtails recorded an impressive 3-3 record, a significant milestone for a group that had gone winless in two previous overseas tournaments. Just as encouraging, each of their three defeats was decided by only a handful of runs, highlighting the remarkable progress the team have made.

While many of the teams they faced train year-round on first-class facilities and compete regularly against high-level competition, the Longtails continue to overcome unique challenges at home.

Limited field availability, unpredictable weather and fewer opportunities for competitive games mean much of their preparation comes through scrimmages against other Longtails age groups. Despite those obstacles, the players continue to improve through their commitment, work ethic and love of the game.

The team consisted of Will Biram, Conor Szakmary, Griffin Bailey, Henry Hopkins, Christopher Hayne, Landon Boorman, Ezrah Lemon, Ethan Adelsberg, William Mitchell, Isaac Metschnabel and Ryan Bernstein.

The tournament began with an unforgettable comeback victory. After falling behind 5-1 early, a clutch two-strike single by Conor Szakmary ignited the offence before Bermuda erupted for five runs in the third inning to claim an 8-6 lead they would never relinquish.

After losing their second game, the team again showcased their resilience, battling back from a six-run deficit to earn a 16-8 victory. Bermuda pounded out 18 hits, led by Boorman, who finished a perfect 3-for-3 with three singles. Biram and Mitchell also recorded three hits apiece, while Szakmary, Bailey, Lemon and Hopkins each added multiple-hit performances.

Their fifth game provided yet another memorable finish as Bermuda edged their opponents 14-13 in a thrilling contest. The Longtails collected 12 hits, with Adelsberg enjoying one of his finest games of the tournament, going 2-for-3 while driving in a team-high three runs. The game’s defining moment came when Bernstein stole home to score the winning run, earning MVP honours.

The team’s final game perfectly summed up the determination and growth. Although the Longtails fell 7-6 on the final play of the game, it was one of the most exciting contests of the entire tournament. Bermuda outhit their opponents, with Metschnabel leading the offence with three hits.

“While the wins were memorable, the tournament’s greatest success was the continued growth of the players,” said a Bermuda Longtails spokesman.

“The experience reinforced that with hard work, commitment, and a team-first attitude, Bermuda’s young athletes can compete with and defeat strong opposition from much larger baseball communities. The future of the Bermuda Longtails programme continues to look bright as these players build not only their baseball skills but also the character, confidence, and friendships that will serve them well both on and off the field.”

The team were managed by head coach Brian Hayne and assistant coaches Andrew Bernstein, Adam Szakmary, Grant Hopkins and Andrew Lemon.

Under-9 Longtails: Price Smith, back row, left, Bill Bailey, John Rolph, Jamie Fraser. Middle row: Sterling Smith, Emile Terceira, Wesley Rolph, Parker Davis, Samantha Davis, Jesse Hayes, Charlie Cooper. Front row: Ryder Thatcher, Liam Fraser, Lucas Nelmes, Theo Bailey, Hughes Woodward

The Longtails under-9 team reached the semi-finals of the Eastern Shore Tournament Baseball — End of June Sizzler.

Competing against experienced opposition from across the US, the Longtails finished with a 2-2 record. Both of Bermuda’s victories were dominant displays, as they defeated their opponents 12-1 and 11-1.

Leading the team was head coach Price Smith alongside assistant coaches Bill Bailey, Jamie Fraser and John Rolph.

The team consisted of Charlie Cooper, Jesse Hayes, Theo Bailey, Parker Davis, Emile Terceira, Liam Fraser, Sterling Smith, Wesley Rolph, Ryder Thatcher, Lucas Nelmes, Sammy Davis and Hughes Woodward.

“Although their tournament concluded one game short of the championship, the experience gained against quality competition will continue to benefit this talented young group as they continue to develop,” said a Bermuda Longtails spokesman.

“Their performance in Ocean City highlighted not only their growing baseball ability but also the bright future of the Bermuda Longtails Baseball Association.

“The Bermuda Longtails Baseball programme extends its sincere appreciation to the coaches, families, sponsors and supporters whose continued commitment makes opportunities like these possible. The memories created, lessons learnt and confidence gained throughout the tournament will remain with these young athletes for years to come.”
