Devonshire Rec and Storm Chasers were confirmed as the Netball Bermuda Summer League champions for their respective divisions last week.

Devonshire Rec fought off strong competition from Lady Stars, who had won the title in the past two years, to win the women’s division undefeated with 22 points. Stars finished on 15 points, the same as PHC Lady Zebras.

Chasers took the honours in the Co-Ed division after winning all ten of their matches to finish on 50 points. Allshores Ballers were second with 33 points, two points ahead of third-placed Bailey’s Bay Breezers.

Miesha Greaves, the Devonshire Rec captain, stated that the disappointment of losing out on the title last summer spurred them on this time.

“Last year’s last-minute loss stuck with us, making us determined to win this year,” Greaves said.

“Lady Stars had it but that was just because of the weather — they had more games in. Once we started playing, we locked in game by game and didn’t lose a single one.

“Our last game was actually against Lady Stars, who played great, but we won 28-18.” We think that was our toughest match of the season but we had the full squad ready as everyone showed up.

“We had subs on deck and we all had one goal — to win. We refused to lose our last game and we weren’t going out like we did last season.”

Debré Evans, the Chasers captain, attributed their success to a strong bond they have formed over the years.

“It’s a huge accomplishment to be crowned champions of the Co-Ed division again,” she said.

“We’ve won the league back-to-back and undefeated, which is no easy feat. New teams come every season and offer new challenges that we as a team have to face.

“Our male players are very technical and understand the game well, which allows us to flow well together as a team.

“We also have a lot of history together as our team has stayed consistently the same, we are all bonded together.

“Summer league is all about fun so we make sure to have fun on top of winning every week. I’m so proud of my team and this achievement as everyone put their best foot forward, we can’t wait to see what next year brings for Storm Chasers.”

In matches played on Tuesday at Bernard Park to bring the season to a close, Bermuda College Chargers defeated Netball Bermuda Under-21 Academy 28-18 in the women’s league.

Chasers were 27-18 triumphant over RenaissanceRe & Friends, while Ballers defeated Atlantic Aces 40-10 in the Co-Ed division.
