A monthlong programme promoting healthy movement in children listed record numbers of participants this year.

The Coalition for the Protection of Children held the fourth and final event yesterday for its Wellness Wednesdays this year.

Kelly Hunt, the executive director of the CPC, said that the free community events started in 2021, with about 30 or 40 people visiting each week. This year, there have been more than 100.

Ms Hunt added: “The initiative is built on the belief that healthy children become healthy adults.

“Through movement, teamwork, confidence-building and positive mentorship, participants develop lifelong habits that extend beyond the summer months.”

Wellness Wednesdays take place every Wednesday in July, and this year featured an array of activities such as jump rope, dance classes — including Soca Fitness — and yoga.

Yesterday, coaches from Eastern Counties cricket clubs taught attendees about the basics of playing the game.

Ms Hunt said that the event helped youngsters to develop teamwork, communication skills and sportsmanship, as well as physical skills such as bowling and fielding techniques.

She added that Wellness Wednesdays became a “true community partnership” as businesses and organisations offered snacks, hydration, equipment and instruction.

The CPC is a charity that aims to increase public awareness of children's issues, advocate on behalf of families and provide services that address critical needs.

Ms Hunt said: “Now in its fifth year, Wellness Wednesdays continues to grow, demonstrating CPC’s commitment to prevention, early intervention and creating safe spaces where children can learn, play and thrive.

“Together, we’re building healthier children, stronger families and a more connected Bermuda — one Wellness Wednesday at a time.”
