An emergency landing took place at the airport last night after an American Airlines flight from Miami suffered a malfunction on its approach to the runway.

Flight AA308 managed to land safely just before 11pm.

As a precautionary measure, the Causeway was temporarily closed.

A spokeswoman for Skyport, the airport operator, said: “American Airlines flight AA308, en route to Bermuda from Miami, declared an emergency due to a navigational aid malfunction while approaching LF Wade International Airport on the evening of July 22.

“The aircraft landed safely at approximately 10.56pm with 92 souls on board, including five crew members.

“The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service met the aircraft on arrival and escorted it to apron seven.

“As a precautionary measure and in accordance with emergency protocol, the Causeway was temporarily closed.

“The occurrence concluded safely at approximately 11.05pm.”

The Bermuda Police Service said that a call was received shortly before 10.30pm from airport operations, indicating a passenger aircraft was on approach to make an emergency landing.

A police spokesman said: “In keeping with standard protocol for such events, the BPS was requested to assist with traffic flow on roadways adjacent and leading to [the airport].

“Officers were dispatched to Blue Hole Hill, Hamilton Parish, as well as the roundabout near Number One Gate, St George’s, to stop the flow of traffic while the aircraft made its final approach and touchdown at LF Wade International Airport.

“The aircraft landed without incident, at approximately 10.55pm.

“The roadway was reopened to regular traffic flow shortly thereafter, with officers resuming regular duties.

“The BPS wishes to thank the public for their patience and co-operation while this emergency situation was being dealt with.”

American Airlines has been contacted for comment.
