A former parks manager accused of offensive comments on the job is no longer employed by the Corporation of Hamilton, a spokeswoman has confirmed.

It had been reported this month that officials launched an investigation into an incident in which a member of staff at the parks department made a comment considered “inappropriate and inconsistent with the standards of professionalism and respect expected in the workplace”.

In response to a request for an update, a spokeswoman for the corporation confirmed that the individual, who had been suspended, was no longer employed by the corporation.

She added: “As this relates to an employment matter, the corporation will not comment on the specific circumstances or details surrounding the matter.

“The corporation remains committed to maintaining a professional, respectful and inclusive workplace where all employees are treated with dignity.

“We continue to review opportunities to strengthen our workplace culture through ongoing dialogue, training and development.

“Our focus remains on supporting our staff, ensuring continuity within the parks department and continuing to deliver the high standard of service expected by the city and the wider community.”

It was reported two weeks ago that Dwayne Caines, chief executive for the city, met with staff to discuss the affair, after it was reported to the authority and a series of consultative meetings were organised with workers in the parks department.
