There was no medal repeat for Jah-Nhai Perinchief at the Commonwealth Games after he retired from the final of the triple jump on Saturday morning.

The winner of the bronze medal at the 2022 Games in Birmingham ran through the pit on his first attempt before deciding not to risk injuring his hamstring, which he believes he aggravated during the qualifying round on Thursday.

“I felt my hamstring a bit through warm-up,” he said. “It was nothing crazy and I think it was from qualifying, just from over-rotating on that first jump. I think I jammed my hip a little bit.”

In the qualifying round, the 28-year-old had two measured jumps, both affected by a 2.9m tailwind. His longest jump was 16.01 metres, placing him seventh.

In the final after struggling with his first attempt at the Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Perinchief decided to call it a day.

“I felt it during the run-through,” he said. “I wanted to be 100 per cent smart because I don't want to blow it off the bone and I still have a season next year. We have world championships and stuff like that.”

The Games was his first competition for more than a year due to injury.

“Of course, I’m disappointed,” he said. “But it’s part of sport. I don’t know an athlete that hasn’t been injured. We push our bodies and triple jump probably takes one of the highest demands.”

After suffering injury last year, this season was about managing as best as possible for the Games and he will now let his body recover.

“There’s no need to try to force any more meets [this year],” he said. “I'm going to call it, go rehab, give myself the proper treatment I need leading up to the next two seasons as the Olympics is two years away.

“I have to have a big year next year and take that to Olympics. That’s my goal.”

The triple jump final was won by Jordan Scott, of Jamaica, with a jump of 16.72, followed by India’s Praveen Chithravel, with 16.58, with bronze going to Selva Prabhu Thirumaran, also of India, with 16.52.
