Online summit aims to unite island communities

An international online summit aimed at bringing island communities together is to return for its eighth edition next month.

The three-day Virtual Island Summit, organised by Island Innovation, is scheduled to begin on September 15 with a line-up of speakers including Jaché Adams, the Minister of Public Works and the Environment.

Others set to speak during the free conference are Lourdes Leon Guerrero, the Governor of Guam, Feleti Penitala Teo, the Prime Minister of Tuvalu, Cora Richardson Hodge, the Premier of Anguilla, and Albert Bryan, the Governor of the US Virgin Islands.

James Ellsmoor, the chief executive of Island Innovation, said: “The Virtual Island Summit is our flagship online event and we are proud to deliver a high-level knowledge-sharing platform that puts islands at the heart of global discussions.

“The summit highlights islands not simply as places facing shared challenges, but as places developing practical solutions with relevance far beyond their own shores.

“This year we are evolving the format to reflect how island communities actually work through challenges: understanding the problem, finding what works and mobilising the resources to scale it.

“We want attendees to leave Vis 2026 with a clearer sense of where islands stand and what comes next.”

A spokeswoman said the first day of the event will focus on how island communities are responding to shifting conditions such as adapting to coastal erosion and decarbonising marine transport.

On the second day, the summit will look at transformation systems and rethinking tourism, reviving indigenous languages and building food independence.

The final day of the summit will focus on mobilisation and what it takes to move people, capital and political will to create results.

All sessions will be available for free, with participants invited to register online at islandinnovation.co/events/virtual-island-summit-2026.
