Bermudian sprinter Miles Outerbridge kept his World Athletics Under-20 Championships campaign alive today, advancing to the semi-finals of the 200 metres in Eugene, Oregon.

Running from lane five in heat seven at the iconic Hayward Field, the 18-year-old clocked 20.98 seconds to finish fifth. Jayden Green, of Barbados, won the heat in 20.58.

With the first three finishers in each heat plus the next six fastest overall progressing, Outerbridge secured one of the time-qualifier spots. He was eighteenth overall of 52 starters, with Amir Thompson, from Barbados, posting the quickest time of the heats with 20.49.

Outerbridge faces a tough assignment in the semi-finals tonight (11.32pm Bermuda time), where he has been drawn alongside American Tate Taylor, who is bidding for a sprint double. The pair met earlier in the week in the 100 preliminary round.

While the Bermudian did not progress in that event, Taylor went on to claim gold in 9.94 in the final.

The semi-final represents another opportunity for Outerbridge to test himself against the world’s best juniors. A top-two finish in his heat, or one of the next two fastest times, would send him through to the final.
