Spin ace Brangman lands Cup Match Sportsmanship Award
Derrick Brangman has been announced as the recipient of this year’s Cup Match Sportsmanship Award by the Bermuda Friendly Societies Association.
The annual award recognises the character, composure, leadership and respect demonstrated during Cup Match and is a reminder that how the game is played matters as much as the result.
Brangman was chosen upon the recommendation of the Bermuda Umpires Association, whose officials observed his consistent sportsmanship throughout this year’s two-day classic. His interactions with team-mates, calm demeanour under pressure and respect for the spirit of the game distinguished him as a worthy recipient.
Brangman reaffirmed his status as a proven match-winner after bowling Somerset to a record-breaking Cup Match victory over St George’s at Somerset this year.
The St David’s captain tormented the batters with his full repertoire of deliveries on the way to a brilliant match haul of eight for 72 as holders Somerset prevailed by an innings and 90 runs to eclipse the previous record for the largest victory in Cup Match of an innings and 66 runs achieved by St George’s in 1962.
He took four for 22 in the first St George’s innings which he followed up with four for 50 in their second, which included last man Zeko Burgess that sealed Somerset’s historic win on their own turf.
Meanwhile, the Bermuda Friendly Societies Association has expanded the award this year by also recognising sportsmanship in the Annual Colts Cup Match, with one player from each team being honoured alongside the senior Cup Match recipient.
The inaugural Colts Cup Match honourees are Somerset’s Callum MacFarlane and St George’s Logan Jones, who were selected by their respective coaches.
The 23rd Cup Match Sportsmanship Awards ceremony will be held at Alexandrina Lodge Hall located at No 75 Court Street, Hamilton on Thursday.
The event will feature former sports minister Glenn Blakeney as the awards speaker and Bermuda sporting legend Clyde Best as presenter.
The public have been invited to attend the awards ceremony, which gets underway at 7pm.
