Landowners and aspiring farmers are being urged to register their interest in an initiative intended to bring potential agricultural spaces to life.

The Department of Planning’s Grow Local programme, created in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, connects available land with people looking to grow food locally and strengthen the island’s agricultural sector.

Through an online platform, landowners with suitable land available for farming can register their property, while those interested in farming can register their interest and explore opportunities.

While a spokeswoman said the department will facilitate introductions, any decisions regarding the use of privately-owned land and any subsequent agreements are entirely at the participant’s discretion.

She added that the initiative is not limited to land designated as agricultural reserve, stating that any site suitable for farming can be considered, and taking part in the programme would not change the planning designation of the land.

Diallo Rabian, the Minister of Education, whose responsibilities include the planning department, said the initiative is about unlocking opportunities that exist within the community.

He added: “We know landowners are willing to make land available and individuals are eager to grow food.

“This initiative helps bring those groups together while supporting Bermuda's long-term food security and agricultural resilience.

“I encourage anyone with suitable land, or anyone interested in farming, to register their interest and become part of this important national effort.”

Landowners interested in making land available for farming and individuals seeking opportunities to grow crops were encouraged to register their interest by visiting the planning department’s website at planning.gov.bm.
